Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, served from 1861 to 1865 and is best known for leading the nation through the Civil War and working to end slavery. Born in a log cabin in Kentucky in 1809, Lincoln was largely self-educated and became a lawyer and politician in Illinois. His Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 paved the way for the abolition of slavery. Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address, emphasizing national unity and equality. He was assassinated in 1865 by John Wilkes Booth.
